The Cambridge Audio CXA81 Mk II Integrated Stereo Amplifier, launched in May 2024, is a refined version of its multi-award-winning predecessor. This 80-Watt per channel Class AB amplifier from British specialists Cambridge Audio builds on existing strengths with significant internal upgrades.
It features an enhanced ESS SABRE ES9018K2M DAC and a re-engineered analog stage with new op-amps, providing superior clarity and depth for digital audio up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM and DSD256. Connectivity is comprehensive, including balanced XLR, RCA, optical, coaxial, and asynchronous USB inputs, plus integrated Bluetooth aptX HD. A large toroidal transformer ensures dynamic, authoritative sound. Outputs include speaker terminals, a pre-out, subwoofer out, and a headphone jack. The CXA81 Mk II is Roon Tested and retains the minimalist “Lunar Grey” design of the CX Series, offering a high-performance and versatile hub for any demanding hi-fi system.

We caught up with our Head of Engineering, Nick Brown, to uncover the thinking and processes that went into the development of CXA81 Mk II.
CXA81 has evolved, developed, and improved as a product for many years through various models, even as far back as 650A to 651A, with an extensive redesign for CXA80. CXA81 has become a multi-award winning product, winning the What Hi-Fi? Best Buy award for four consecutive years.
At every stage in the CXA81 Mk II design process, we were aware that the CXA81 sound had been extremely well received, so we didn’t want to move too far away from this signature sound, which we believe to be fun, dynamic, engaging, and exciting. Our main goal was to add an extra level of definition to the current signature sound rather than a major deviation.
